Falcon's Weekly Update

Good afternoon Falcons,

What a busy week here at Falgarwood. We had two kick-off assemblies for Terry Fox. Pranav Adnani, a School Run Ambassador was our guest speaker and has inspired all our staff and students to get our runners on and run on September 27th for Terry! Teachers have also been busy starting up clubs, including cross country, volleyball, Friends of Ferris, student athletic council, and flag football.

Today our fire alarm went off unexpectedly during our second nutrition break. Our staff and students acted quickly and quietly to exit the building. The fire department arrived and commented on how efficient we were!

Please note we are a nut-free building. It is important to keep all nut products at home as we have several children with allergies this includes all kinds of nuts, peanut butters, nut butter, and WOW butter and nut brands like Nutella.

Cross country

Cross Country practices will be starting the week of September 16th during nutrition breaks for everyone interested in grades 3-8. Return your permission form to be able to attend practices.  All abilities are welcome!   We encourage students with disabilities and/or different abilities to come out and join us! Personalized modifications and adapted running routes can be provided. If you would like your child to have an adaptive route or modifications please reach out to Mrs. Rychel (rychelr@hdsb.ca).  Falgarwood’s cross-country meet will be held on October 7th! Go Falcons!

Falgarwood will have regular visits from an HDSB Occupational Therapist (OT)  who will be working with our Special Education Resource Team members. This letter shares more information about their role. ErinOaks.pdf

Lockdown practice

Staff, students and visitors in Ontario schools have the right to learn, work and be present in a safe and secure environment. As part of the Ministry of Education, we must establish a lockdown policy to ensure its development and implementation. Mandatory Ministry requirements state that we need to practice two lockdown drills per school year. On September 16th, 2024 we will be having a lockdown drill.

Dogs on school property

As much as we love our furry friends, not everyone is comfortable around dogs. Many parents and caregivers, find the walk to and from school to be a good time to also walk the family dog. If this is the case, please do not bring the dog onto the blacktop on school property, as some students are allergic or fearful.  It is also difficult to predict a dog’s behaviour when confronted with a large group of excited children.

Repost School Council: Parents please consider joining our School Council this year! We have the nomination form attached here Nomination Form . We are hoping to have lots of parents join us for our school council meetings this year. If you are interested please have your nomination forms in by September 17 at 4:00pm, 2024. Our election night will be held virtually on September 23rd at 6:00pm. A Google link will be sent to those who have filled out the nomination forms. Our first official school meeting will be on Oct 7, 2024. All Council meetings will be the first Monday of every month from 6:00-7:00pm in the library. We look forward to seeing you then.
